I wonder if it is possible to make a distinction between patriotism and loyalty to the state.

I would put patriotism in as love of the ideals a country is founded on while loyalty to the state is support at any cost (kind of like Republicans supporting Rudy).

I certainly see the value in teaching children love of the founding principles of our country but loyalty to the state has communist / fascist overtones.
