My husband had rented an interesting movie and I decided I wanted to be able lie on the bed while watching.... so off to the bathroom I headed with my 24/7 sidekick shadowing me to put my contacts in.
She stood quietly beside the sink watching me as I fished first one contact out and then the other. As I was fidgeting with the second one and wishing I did not need contacts her little voice piped up:
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"I'm putting my contacts in." I replied.
"Oh." Heavy Sigh followed this and then...
"I just wisss I had contact lenses."
That brought a chuckle from me as I put the lenses case away and she grasped my hand with her little pudgy one and walked back to the bedroom with me.
Later as I pondered over that and how a little three year old has no idea what contact lenses really are, nor understand the inconvenience of needing corrective lenses, I was struck by the thought that it is not so much the lenses she wanted, so much as the age old desire of wanting to be "just like Mummy" or in the case of boy - more often to be 'just like Daddy'.
What an incredible responsibility that is and one that I too often take for granted. And this window is a rather small one because before long there is much else competing for this desire to be "just like" something, so I had best make the best of this time and make sure I am something worth modeling.

What a good point ! All too often we forget that everything we say or do is being seen not only by our children but by others. A priest once told our adult religious education group that everything that we do is a reflection not only on us but our Parish and our Faith. It is so true !
My husband works with a very nice guy who is on the fence, so to speak, about religion. He is an unmarried adult ( In his 50's I believe ) who was raised by a Mother who ,from what I gather ,was Christian and a father who was spiritual, though not accepting of organized religion. He tells stories of how his Dad would go out in the woods alone on Sunday morning while he and his Mom went to church, to be alone with God. Anyway, this dear man has through the years lost much faith due to what he refers to as " too many unanswered prayers"Anyway My dear husband , Mike and he became friends and one day Mike mentioned that he was doing some video taping at the church's yearly mission. This man asked Mike what religion he was. When Mike answered Catholic, the man just looked at him. Finally he said " Do you realize that by telling people that you put yourself in the same group as Judy" ( a woman who worked there that had a habit of not being very nice ) Mike just replied that there are good and bad of all. A couple days later this man started asking Mike questions like ; was he really Catholic or was his wife so he just called himself Catholic too ? Mike informed him that we both truly were. Weeks of questions followed and Mike did his best to answer honestly. About a month later, this man commented that maybe he was wrong about the Catholic church. Mike invited him to come to church with us but he wasn't quite there yet, though he mentioned maybe coming to a Spaghetti dinner or something sponsored by the church sometime. I guess this is a start and pray that he does and that he meets some other wonderful Catholic people and who knows where it all could lead ?
Sorry this is so long but your post made me think of it and I had to share. By the way, can't wait to see your new blog. Please invite me !
